My Maltese is panting and shaking after eating salmon. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 3 years and 9 months old | 13 lbs

I gave my dog wild caught salmon which I baked in the oven and cooled off. I think he’s having trouble sleeping because he’s panting at rest and shaking slightly. I don’t know if he’s suffering. He’s two months short of four years old. He’s a dainty Maltese.

Oscar is experiencing very general symptoms of disease, these symptoms could fit almost any internal condition, maybe he is suffering from nausea due to a gastrointestinal disease (could be related to the salmon) and maybe he is in pain, from the symptoms described it's very hard to know. i would recommend taking him to the vet as soon as possible in order to get him checked, if he doesn't show any other obvious symptoms during the examination, a blood test and possibly an ultrasound will be needed in order to try and find out what is wrong with Oscar.
