My dog strains to poop and licks. Is it constipation or diarrhea?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 7 months and 16 days old | 44 lbs

I think my little girl may be constipated. Saw her battling to poop earlier (walking from spot to spot and squating, but nothing). She's also been licking her bottom a fair bit. She was dewormed on 4th Dec (do I need to deworm again?), and I have checked for ticks around her tail- nothing. If she is constipated what can I do to help relieve her. Ps- we changed to a raw diet 2 weeks ago, and she has been in antibiotics and cortisone- not sure if that has impacted her current state.

It could be that Fig has diarrhea, and she has the urge to go but nothing left to pass making you think she is constipated. I would deworm her again, as intestinal worms are a common cause of diarrhea in puppies. Antibiotics can cause diarrhea as a side effect, so that could also be a cause of her behavior. Should this continue, I would take her into the vet for a health check. Best of luck.
