Is my cat grieving a lost pet? What are the signs and how to help?

Seems a weird question but can i tell if my cat is greiving? I think he is. My moms dog and my cats best bud died (old age) they dont live together but would play when ever my moms dog would stop out. It felt right thing to do so i told my cat that the dog had passed. He seemed suprised and walked around with his tail down and even rejected a treat. He had a fellow cat die before (severe infection) and he acted similar (he hasnt been calling out with meows this time. Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 years and 9 months old
