My cat got Amazon flea spray. Should I worry or take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered

I used flea spray on my cat that said it was vet approved I purchased it on amazon, however upon using it twice (one on the cat as it said it was safe) i read reviews saying it caused their cat to be sick. Only one or two reviews but I am still worried. He’s not displaying any abnormal puking or diarrhea or weakness but I’m still worried. Should I take him to the vet?

I do not think you need to be worried, however, I do not think that this spray is useful against fleas. Here is a proper way of getting rid of fleas: Unfortunately fleas only hop on the body of your pet when they want to feed, then they hop off again and stay in your pet's environment. So you need to treat all pets in the household as well as the environment (which contains the fleas, their eggs and larvae). Flea treatment:  1) Get some flea medication such as a Flea spray or a spot on from a pet shop or your veterinarian and apply monthly 2) get flea powder, put some in your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum your house and furniture and also non-carpeted areas frequently to remove flea larvae and eggs which live off house dust., Dispose of the bag in the trash outside. Hot-wash all the pet's bedding, If you do this diligently for a few months you will get rid of the fleas. Flea products: Spot-ons and/or chews Advantage, Advantage Multi (Advocate in the UK) Frontline (ticks as well) Bravecto spot on (ticks as well) - for cats Simparica, Nexgard Revolution (stronghold in the UK) Tablets: comfortis (will only kill fleas once) Collar: Seresto (ticks as well) House spray: Indorex

Hello, if Todd is asymptomatic, then just keep a close eye on him. This product has nothing in it to fight fleas, so throw the bottle away. Essential oils, while considered safe, are not a great option for cats. Some cats can be very sensitive to the compounds, so if you need to treat Todd for fleas, get advice from your vet, or just stick with the tried & true products such as Frontline, Advantage, or even Bravecto. There are now many generics available that have brought the costs down considerably. If you want, you can bathe Todd in any shampoo to remove any of the sprays residue, but if he seems fine, there is no need to rush off to the vet. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
