My cat has a growing wound on her leg she keeps licking. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 21 days old

My cat has developed a wound on the inside of her leg near her bum. She is an indoor cat. I remember feeling it awhile ago thinking it was a little knot. and it has now grown. I can't stop her licking at it as she is very irritated by it. I am not sure what to do? I cannot afford to take her to the vet.

That area looks pretty irritated, and abscesses (infections under the skin) are very common in cats due to the bacteria in their saliva. Misty will need to be seen by a vet in order to have the area cleaned, drained as needed, and a course of antibiotics given. You should also use an Elizabethan (cone) collar to keep her from licking the spot as it heals and causing further irritation. If you are having trouble affording veterinary care, this site may help give you some ideas to make it more affordable so Misty can be seen: https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/having-trouble-affording-veterinary-care
