My pet has low hemoglobin. How can I improve it and what food helps?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A low hemoglobin is not typically fixed with a diet. This is fixed by treating the underlying cause of the iron deficiency anemia and in some cases by supplementing with iron. If she is in a balanced diet you should be good. I recommend that you talk to your veterinarian about treating her anemia. Best of luck!

    Low hemoglobin is usually the result of low iron. However this typically only occurs if there is another underlying problem. If your dog is on a well balanced diet it is probably getting enough iron already and the other underlying issue needs to be addressed. There are some iron vitamin supplements that you can give, this would probably be your best bet because it will be safe and easy to use. You should be able to purchase them at any PetCo store. You will not notice any physical changes with a raise in platelets. They simply form clots. Energy will increase with better oxygen-carrying ability, which is accomplished by having more red blood cells. Hemoglobin is in red blood cells, and can be low with anemia or iron deficiency. Making sure that Luffy has a good-quality dog food and a few treats of iron-rich foods (like spinach or red meat) will help by giving the body the building blocks it needs to make more red blood cells.

My dog that I adopted from a shelter was spayed about a week ago she is slightly anemic and they believe it's caused from her surgery I would like to know what kind of food I should feed her to help bring it back to normal levels she's on Merrick dry
Sounds like she is a lucky girl to have found you. As you are feeding a balanced dog food she is getting the correct nutrition she needs. So diet at this point will not address the anemia. As there are many causes of anemia if it does not correct to normal in a few weeks than further testing should be pursued to find a cause such as testing for parasites (gi), heartworms, and tick borne diseases if not already performed by the shelter. Categories of causes of anemia are blood loss, destruction, and decreased production. I hope this helps and thank you for using Boop by Petco!

What iron rich food can a dog have to help anemia? Thanks.
Anemia in dogs is not usually cause as a result of iron deficiency, so this shouldn't be what you are looking for in food. generally to help a dog recovering from anemia (after the primary reason has been treated), you should feed him a high quality food with high meat content such as Orijen dry food for example.

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. If Moji continues to be anemic, he may need a blood transfusion. This could be due to his immune system destroying his red blood cells in a condition known as Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA). Treatment for IMHA typically entails suppressing the immune system along with treating any potential infectious causes. It sounds as if the veterinarian working on Moji is treating him appropriately. Unfortunately, treating anemia can be a waiting game. Blood values need to be monitored every 2-3 days in the initial period and if the red blood cells continue to decline, he will need to be hospitalized for further treatment and closer monitoring. I agree with what response I got in case of Marshal- a golden retriever. However, a blood test and SGOT test have been done and the doctor said, only haemoglobin is less, say 9, rest are okay. Now, can you advice me any medicine that I should give it
I am sorry we can not see your previous question when you write a new question. So from what you write here i can assume your pet is vomiting and had blood work with your family vet which showed a low red count. We can not prescribe medications via this site. This is a question and answer service but prescribing requires an exam and established relationship (this is required by law for our licenses). So, if your vet has seen marshal he or she should be able to prescribe some medication for the vomiting. If the red count is low then this should be worked up to see if this is related to the vomiting. I hope this helps and thank you for using Boop by Petco!

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. I am sorry to hear that Lucky is not feeling well. I am quite concerned about the anemia as the level is getting low. I unfortunately do not know what the cause is of the anemia as there are many causes ranging from immune mediated anemia, cancer, hemorrhage, etc. Because I do not have Lucky in front of me and am unable to examine him, I cannot make the most appropriate treatment recommendations. There are no over the counter remedies that will help with this most likely as he most likely needs a further workup to pinpoint where the red blood cells are going. Until then, it is a guessing game. I would recommend trying to get him somewhere where there is a veterinarian so that he can be worked up further. I hope this helps and hope that Lucky feels better soon!

The pale gums do signify anemia that could be related to kidney disease, cancer, bone marrow disease and other significant issues as well. I think your ideas are good and could be beneficial although they do not address the underlying problem. However good nutrition is always a good thing. Cats that are hard to handle are challenging and diagnostics are the only way to know what is the cause of the anemia. Certainly it is concerning that she did not do well with sedation. You may contact her vet and ask about an option of an oral light sedative called Gabapentin that tends to work well for aggressive cats without the side effects of stronger sedatives. It doesn’t work for every cat but I find it to be effective more often than not. Your vet will decide if this is an option based upon your pet’s overall health and previous medical history. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! To be able to help your pup, it is crucial to find out why he is not eating and most importantly why he is anemic. This may be due to an immune mediated condition or an infection of some kind. For this reason, I recommend that they proceed with diagnostics such as infectious disease testing and abdominal ultrasound to look for possible reasons. Therapy would be dependent on findings. Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Hello. Sometimes when an individual starts off life in a poor way, full development can be compromised. But with good care, catch-up with littermates is possible. I think feeding the Royal Canin is a very smart move, but I am always a little concerned about adding supplements. It is just so easy to over supplement & cause more problems, especially when you are already using a nutritionally complete food. No one can guarantee that Luffy will develop totally in comparison with other GSDs, but he should be the best he can be. You also need to keep in mind that GSDs can be quite prone to hip & elbow dysplasia, & the wrong supplementation can exacerbate this condition.
