Why is my dog's muzzle suddenly swollen and she keeps licking it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | spayed | 15 lbs

Hello, my 9 year old jack russell terrier is has slight swelling on her muzzle. The swelling came on abruptly, she is constantly licking her muzzle but there are no signs of trauma, blood or puss, and her teeth look normal. Her breathing also isn't laboured.

Hi there. It may be that she received a bite from an insect or spider and she is having an allergic reaction. Lima may also be having an allergy to something else, but a swollen muzzle is often the first signs. It could also be due to some self trauma to the area from rubbing or licking, but that generally doesn't happen suddenly. I would monitor closely and continue to monitor her breathing like you are. If it gets worse, I would consider having her seen by a vet as she may need a dose of antihistamine and steroids. I hope that helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
