My dog dry heaves at night but seems fine. Is it acid reflux?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 42 lbs

My dog has woken up twice in the middle of the night dry heaving (2:45am and 4:15am). I work at a vet clinic as a technician, that being said I’m always a tad over paranoid with my pets because of where I work and what I see everyday. But the only symptom he is showing is the dry heaving. He is eating/drinking normally, his gums are a good color, he is urinating/dedicating normally, and still roughhousing with our other dogs and playing with his toys.

Poor guy. This sounds like Bennett may be experiencing some acid reflux. Typically this affects pets when they have an empty stomach (at night) or early morning. Ask you vet about doing a trial run with some antacids to see if this helps. You can also feed him a late night snack (small meal) to see if this helps Otherwise consider having some bloodwork ran to check his organ function for any further clues. I hope that Bennett is just experiencing acid reflux and can be managed well soon! Best wishes and take care.
