My goat had a swollen udder and acted sick. Is it mastitis or thiamine deficiency?

A few months ago my goat got really sick, where she almost seemed paralyzed, she was throwing her head back and moaning, and she wouldn't let anyone come near her. She had a hard swollen udder (she was not pregnant, I have no male goats that cpuld have bred her). A day or two later she was fine, but still had the swollen udder. I heard that those symptoms were a thyimen deficiency, but also heard it was mastitis, but she has never had babies. Would it harm her to give her a dose of thyimen?

Hi there. Thiamine deficiency doesn't typically resolve that rapidly, so they is unlikely to be the cause. It does sound like she may have mastitis as this will cause a firm, swollen udder. If your goat is on a balanced diet of high quality grass hay, you shouldn't need to supplement with anything. I would recommend having a vet come check her udder for mastitis if her udder is still swollen. I hope that helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
