Why does my cat faint when trying to vomit hairballs? Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 4 years and 7 months old | 12 lbs

My 4yo cat vomits hairballs occasionally. Today he was heaving as if he were about to vomit. A small amount of fluid came up and then he fainted. Eyes open but was unconscious for about 30 seconds. He started to come to and was dazed for about 10 mins. He now seems normal. This is 2nd time this has happened. I’ve read that the vagus nerve is sensitive and could be the reason this happens. I’m wondering if there is an underlying issue causing fainting or the act of vomiting is causing fainting.

Hello. Very good! You may have indeed hit on the cause of Momo's spells. But it is just as important to rule out any other issues, especially anything connected to the heart or high blood pressure. I would definitely mention this to your vet at his next visit to make sure the chest is auscultated for any murmurs or arrhythmias. There is really not much you can do about the vagal stimulation, but perhaps a small amount of hairball laxative several times a week will decrease the chance of Momo needing to vomit up any more hairballs.
