My dog has a new, growing spot on his lip. Should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 95 lbs

My 1.5yr old Rhodesian/Boxer mix has developed a spot on his lip. It is not from a scratch, as the skin is healthy and normal. It looks swollen in pictures due to the hair follicles being dark, however it is not swollen/raised. It does not bother him, I don’t think he even realizes that I am touching it. It appeared out of nowhere and seems to be growing in just the 2 days I’ve been watching it. Is it just skin discoloration? Or should I schedule a vet appointment? Thanks!

I am sorry to hear about yoru concern for Cash. Since the area is increasing in size I would recommend having your vet examine it just to be safe. We can see pigmentary changes in pets but we can also have things like infection of the skin of the chin (chin pyoderma) that may start like this, ringworm (fungal infection), and histiocytoma (benign growths https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952066) .
