My dog's injured nail smells bad and isn't healing. Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 62 lbs

My dog has some how injured one of her nails by getting it tangled in a blanket. It's been a week now & she is still limping some & licking it a lot. I've been cleaning it with peroxide & alcohol. I noticed today that it kinda smells bad. So I cleaned it again, put antibiotic ointment on it & wrapped it up. Is there anything else I can do to help it heal? Or is a nail injury something I need to take her to the Vet to be fixed?

Hi there. I'm sorry to hear about Tinker Bell. My pit has done this many times! If it's not getting better, she probably needs to see your vet and have them remove the infected nail quick. When the nail breaks, the quick can become infected and painful. It's best to remove this and let the nail grow back normally. I hope that helps!
