My dog has recurring skin problems, fur loss, and a musty smell. Why?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

Are there any skin/health conditions that mimic demodectic mange? Yoshi has had a recurring skin problem since we got him 6 yrs ago he is of unknown age. (Guess 12) He loses fur scratches its unrelated to seasons unrelated to food he smells musty when it happens not yeasty but like old books. He has had 2 skin scrapings nothing seen. Although I'm not sure they did deep enough scrapings. I'm looking for ideas maybe my get has not thought of. They can only suggest steroids

I am so sorry to hear about Yoshi, what a frustrating situation for you and Yoshi, as skin problems often are! We certainly can see these symptoms with other conditions, such as food allergies and atopic dermatitis (allergies to things in the environment) https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952662 ). If your vet has no other offering for treatment than steroids I would consider a second opinion or ask for referral to a dermatogist, as there are certainly other options for treatment in these cases once the cause is determined, they they are often lifelong treatments and can be costly.
