My cat vomited moving worms. Are they dangerous? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | 3 months and 7 days old | 8 lbs

My cat just vomited up two worms. They were still moving around. I am terrified he us very sick. We have had him for about three months and think he is a little over a year old. I attached a picture with my index finger in it for scale. Can you identify this type of worm? Is this dangerous? I am getting him to the vet Minday morning. Please help. Thank you.

This looks segmented from the photo so this is a tapeworm. Cats get tapeworms from eating rodents, or fleas when grooming. They can’t be given to humans or other animals since they need to go through an intermediate host. You can purchase tapeworm medication at PetCo. I recommend using a monthly flea preventative so Smokey won’t get these again. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Smokey.
