Why is my cat's butt always poopy and he doesn't clean himself?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Manx | Male | neutered | 7 months and 24 days old | 8 lbs

When Rajah poops (even formed) he usually has a mess on his anus. We are washing him after almost every poop. I've noticed it does help a little if I give a sanitary shave, but he still needs his butt wiped. I've also noticed he doesn't clean his butt. I don't understand why his butt is almost always poopy. He's been treated for parasites and been on probiotics as well as antibiotics. Is this something serious?

Rajah is a Manx. Unfortunately Manx cats, especially those without a tail or just a stump of a tail often have neurological problems and get fecal incontinence. He also may not be able to reach to his anus to clean himself. This is called Manx Syndrome. Here is some information: https://www.ufaw.org.uk/cats/manx-manx-syndrome You will likely need to keep him shaved, and you can put some vaseline on the skin around his anus to protect his skin. And you will need to clean him regularly.
