Why is my dog drooling excessively but acting normal? What causes it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 7 years and 11 months old | 80 lbs

Hi, about an hour ago Rocco started drooling excessively. He didn't get into anything and he isn't anxious or stressed. Besides the drooling, he's acting completely normal. I checked inside his mouth and his teeth look okay. About 3 weeks ago he got some little growths removed, all benign, and the sitches came out last Thursday. Does the one on his elbow look infected? (Pic attached) it is red and hard, but not oozing. Could this cause the drooling? Or could he have a cold or throat infection?

Although the area in your picture does look red and potentially inflamed I don't think it looks infected. It would be best for your vet to make that call in person - I'd recommend making an appointment to have them examine the area in person and until then you should prevent Rocco from licking the area. I doubt the drooling is related. Drooling can be related to a tooth problem (possibly something you can't see), nausea, pain or ingesting something that tastes bad. If the drooling continues you should bring this up to your vet as well.
