Can I give my dog Metacam and Tramadol at the same time safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 years and 8 months old

How long do you have to wait after giving Tramadol and starting Metacam? The article on the Internet said Metacam can cause Seisures if given too high a dosage. Not the Tramadol. Which is it? Thanks!!

Tramadol and metacam can be given together. They are 2 different drugs with different mechanisms of action and different side effects. Metacam has a very narrow dose whereas tramadol has a wider, safer dose range. Metacam is an NSAID and can cause a variety of side effects, most notably gi ulceration and kidney injury. Dosing of both should be provided by your vet based on your pets health history and bloodwork. Monitoring of bloodwork is very important with metacam use. Hello. Without knowing the reason for the medications, we cannot make recommendations, but Metacam as dispensed by your veterinarian has been a very safe medication in the treatment of osteoarthritis & other painful conditions. Tramadol is not being recommended much these days because it just does not seem to have the same pain relieving effects in dogs as it does in people. But it was often prescribed along with an NSAID like Metacam. Please speak with the veterinarian that prescribed the Metacam for his recommendations about using Tramadol or another pain relieving medication. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Yes it is okay to give your dog the prescribed tramadol at the same time as the metacam, as the tramadol is an opioid and the metacam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. However do check with your vet if he still wants you to give the tramadol to Jellie, as she may not need it when on meloxicam.
