My puppy has distemper with neurological issues. Is there hope?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My partner's puppy named bonita has a very serious disease of canine distemper. Yesterday she was still responding to her owner but now she's just out of her head like in a wander state. Her head movement is non stop, she's becoming thin, she's not responding to any name calling or petting and her head just keeps bobbing or going different directions. Does she still have a chance? She already gone to the vet and prescribed her vitamins and antibiotics. I just don't know if she's still fighting.

I am so sorry to hear that her disease has progressed. Unfortunately if distemper starts to cause neurological symptoms then it is unlikely that she will recover. Typically seizure activity will follow in the near future. I am so sorry to relay this poor prognosis. However, every patient is different and there is always a chance of improvement. I would encourage you to consider having a follow up appointment with your veterinarian for a reassessment . Thank you for using Pet Coach.

I am sorry to hear that your dog is not doing well. Distemper can be a serious infection and once neurological signs develop, the prognosis worsens in my experience. With her going into a coma like state, I would say the prognosis is guarded to poor and she may not have much longer. As long as she as in a hospital for treatment, this is the best chance she has but it sounds like she is deteriorating and not improving. This may be the time you consider making the decision to let her go if she continues to worsen and does not improve. Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment for distemper, only supportive care and that is what she is currently receiving.
