Worried: My new puppy isn't eating. Could it be distemper again?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 16 days old | 5.3 lbs

my previous puppy died of distemper virus a month ago. as per vet's directions, we waited for a month for another puppy and meanwhile cleaned everything in the house with bleach solution 5-6 times. we got the new puppy 2 days ago. he was very well, very active and eating good, his poop were good, suddenly today he didn't eat his second meal which was kibble with some puppy cerelac, so i gave him only cerelac but he didn't eat that too. drank a little water tho.is this distemper again?

This could be distemper but could also just be a little upset tummy or parasites. There are a lot of different things that can cause loss of appetite. I would try to offer him some plain boiled boneless skinless chicken and white rice to see if this entices him to eat and settles his tummy. If he is still not eating then I would have your vet take a look at him. These little puppies can get dehydrated really quick so I don’t recommend waiting to see a vet for too long. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better soon!

Poor Chico. It may be that he is away from his mom and littermates. He may also not be use to the dog food over his mother’s milk depending on his age. I would continue to offer him the dry and canned puppy food. If he isn’t eating it you can also try some plain chicken (no bones) and white rice. If he doesn’t eat anything, I would be sure to put some Karo syrup or nutrical in his gums to prevent a low blood sugar. If he continues to not eat, lethargic (never playing) or any other symptoms, I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to do a fecal and even blood work if needed and get him started on meds if needed. I hope this helps!

Being so small he really shouldn't be eating a lot. The milk supplement may actually upset his tummy. He should be eating about 1/4-1/2 cup of food a day if he is only 4 pounds. If you can see his ribs then I would try to get him to eat more. I would offer him dry and wet food. You can even try to see if he will eat some plain boiled boneless, skinless chicken and white rice. He could have intestinal parasites which is preventing him from gaining weight. If he is lethargic, has diarrhea, vomiting, or not eating at all, I would try to find an emergency vet to take him to as he could become really dehydrated and sicker if he isn't seen before Monday. I hope this helps!
