Pet's info: Cat | Korat | Male | neutered | 13 years and 11 months old | 9.6 lbs
Hi, Beau is on Clavamox for lower right jaw sensitivity. Everything looks fine from the outside-- no swelling, or ulcer. He's too old for xray under sedation, so the vet surmise that it might be canine root abscess. However, 1) his canine was extracted years ago, 2) after only 3 days of antibiotic, the pain is gone. Can I rule out dental abscess? Perhaps he just bumped the jaw and had a bruise? He is eating fine. If it's an abscess, will finishing a course of Clavamox suffice? Thank you!

I wouldn't say that you can rule out an abscess, on the contrary, if it got better after antibiotic treatment, it's likely to be a tooth abscess. the antibiotic may solve the problem but you cannot know in advance, you need to finish the antibiotic course and wait a few weeks to see if it comes back or not. if it comes back he will need a dental procedure, and by the way he is nowhere too old for anesthesia, a few weeks ago one of my oldest patients, a cat 23 years of age, went through a small procedure under general anesthesia without any issues.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It could be a tooth root abscess if the root was left behind at the time of extraction. This could also be a lesion of a different etiology such as a cancerous lesion in the underlying bone. You can try the course of antibiotics but if no improvement is noted, the imaging is really going to be required so that therapy can be directed at the actual cause of this. Best of luck!
