Is it normal for my Basset Hound puppy's ribs to stick out?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Basset Hound | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 16 days old | 25 lbs

I have a basset hound puppy, who is a month old and is it weird if his ribs stick out towards the back of his body near his tail. He doesn't cry or scream when I touch them. Do I need to take him to the vet? Plus he eats more than he is supposed too and loves to chew on things.

Handsome boy! It’s not uncommon for some puppies to have the last rib flare out. It’s nothing to be overly concerned about. If he’s an active dog I recommend feeding him as much as he wants to eat while growing. The recommended amount on the bag is just a guideline. As he ages and becomes less active and not growing as quickly he should not eat as much. As far as chewing goes he’s a puppy and is probably teething so he will naturally chew on things. Please get him chew toys so he doesn’t chew the furniture. This stage should last a couple of months then most dogs grow out of it.
