My dog's Trazodone for anxiety isn't working. Has he built tolerance?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 3 years and 6 months old | 5.5 lbs

Our 3.5 year old yorkie suffers from terrible anxiety. He is on a quarter of a 100 mg Trazodone tablet a day. We have seen great results for about six months but have noticed him becoming upset again for little or almost no reason. Could he have built up a tolerance?

It is possible Petey has built up a tolerance to Trazodone. This can happen if used long term. Discuss an increase with your veterinarian. Consider also desensitization therapy and a pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffuser, to further help decrease anxiety.
