Senior dog bad breath, drool, chattering jaw. Is anesthesia safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Labrador | Male | neutered | 75 lbs

I took my 13 yr old lab to the vet last week. The bloodwork was mostly normal, with just the exception of one thing being elevated related to inflammation. His teeth were not that bad considering his age. He has unbearable breath, drool, and chattering jaw. I think it's CUPS based on what I'm reading. He's on gabapentin for pain. Is there anything else I can do? I am scared to have him put under anesthesia due to his age. Thanks.

Hello, sorry to hear about Gunner. CUPS is typically a diagnosis that is made with histopathology and examination for the hallmark changes in the gum line. Given that Gunner has bad breath and drooling this is very possible. Besides having a dental cleaning and extractions if necessary, most dogs also need antibiotic therapy. CUPS is in general a very painful condition that prevents dogs from being unable to eat. If Gunner develops anorexia, then he may need to have a dental in order to alleviate his pain. You may consult with your veterinarian about obtaining antibiotics for his dental disease. Hope this helps and best of luck.
