Why is my cat aggressive and irritable from a bacterial infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Turkish Angora | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 5 months old | 6.6 lbs

Antonio has been acting strange lately, he doesn’t want anyone to come near him and he almost scratched my other cat when she tried to come near him, he’s been staying near the door all day wanting to get out. His meow isn’t as normal, it’s much lower and feels as if he is trying to communicate with me. He has a bacterial infection and is being treated, is that irritating him?

Hello, sorry to hear about Antonio. Cats may indeed become very irritable when feeling unwell or when being medicated. Its likely that his current infection/treatment are making him feel irritated and has a bad temperament. If his infection is not improving, if his attitude continues to decline, if he is not eating or drinking then he should be seen by his veterinarian again to ensure there his treatment is working properly. Hope this helps and best of luck.
