My epileptic dog had a seizure, now can't use back legs. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 10 months old

My dog has had epilepsy for 1.5 years. It has been bad (he wouldn’t eat/take his pills) but he became okay. Today he had another seizure and now he can’t use husband back legs (eg walk or even turn on the other side while he’s lying down). I am 16 and my parents are becoming quite devastated (because of the financials) and I don’t know what to do. Help me?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Seizures can occur due to many reasons that go from a toxicity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and even tumors. The fact that he cannot use his legs is very concerning as that could be the result of the seizures or be unrelated. I highly recommend that you have Max evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. They would also be able to start him on anti-seizure medications to try to avoid the onset of more seizures. Good luck and have a good day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
