My dog was attacked: What first aid for wounds when vet is closed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | neutered | 3 years old | 25 lbs

My dachshund was just attacked by neighbors bulldog on my back porch. He has 2-3 puncture wounds one on his neck and the others on his back legs. He has a 1 inch laceration in the center of his stomach, like where his belly button is. All vets offices near me are closed until tomorrow morning, so I need advice on what to do for my baby until I am able to take him there.

I recommend cleaning all of the wounds with hydrogen peroxide. Then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on them. Keep him quiet so he can rest and heal. Dog fight wounds get infected easily so please make sure to bring him right in tomorrow morning for treatment. If needed they can close the small laceration and get him on oral antibiotics to prevent infection. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Dexter.
