My Dachshund has bloody liquid stool. When should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 9 years and 4 months old | 19 lbs

I have a 9 yo wiener dog who is recovering from a bulging disc in his neck. He is on gabapentin/gilibrant/dasaquin. I think he ate a chicken bone from our leftover wings on Sunday. His behavior is fine and he eats fine. The only concern is stool. In the last 24 hrs it has become only complete liquid (watery) and now has a trace of blood. 1.5 years ago he has bloody stool and it resolved on its on but I was left w/ $1700 bill. I’d rather wait is possible or should I call our vet tomorrow?

I am sorry to hear about Higgins! I would recommend letting your vet know about his stool. It may be related to eating the chicken (the bones usually don't cause issue but the spices/fat can sometimes cause GI upset) but he is also on some medications (Galliprant I am guessing it what you mean when you said gilibrant) that can cause GI upset as well and we want to be sure we don't need to stop or alter his medication. If his energy level is normal, he has no abdominal pain, his gums are pink, and he is not vomiting he should be ok to wait until tomorrow to call your vet, but I would recommend letting them know.
