My dog's skin is dry and eyes gooey after grooming. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 6 years and 6 months old | 11.9 lbs

Ben was fully groomed 2 days ago, we had her use his medicated Dermabenss shampoo for his skin (for his allergies) Its been ~2-3 months since last groomed bc of a leg injury, but before grooming his skin actually looked good considering & groomer said that as well. Well today I noticed his skin is bad flaking, dry spots on belly & penis, his eyes have green goo built up already? is his skin so dry bc it was a while since being bathed? Or somehow didn’t notice? His eyes were fully clean yesterday

Hello, thank you for your question about Bentley. I suspect that Bentley's skin is a little bit dry secondary to being bathed and groomed. This strips the skin of it's natural oils which can make it dry and flaky. The eye discharge could also be secondary to the grooming due to the blowing around of the groomed hair/debris as this can be mildly irritating to the eyes. I would recommend continuing to monitor Bentley to see if these signs improve. If these symptoms due not resolve or his ocular discharge gets worse/becomes more green/colored I would recommend having him seen by your veterinarian so that they can look for any signs of an eye/skin infection. Hope this helps, good luck!
