How to stop my 10-month-old dog from biting and jumping when excited?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Spitz | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 25 lbs

My dog is 10 months old now, and he is still biting anything and everything. He jumps at us and bites our legs. Sometimes he gets just too over-excited, and this is the reason why we have to tie him up frequently throughout the day. How can I help him overcome this habit?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Usually these behaviors can be corrected but this usually requires in person training by a qualified dog trainer. I recommend you consider contacting a qualified dog trainer to work with you in person. Good luck and have a good day!

You could try teaching her to sit when anyone approaches her. Ask friends and family to help with the training. Give them treats ahead of time to give to Jasmine once she sits down. They should ask her to sit and not pay attention to her or reward her until she does. Gradually length the amount of time she has to sit before she gets the reward. Be patient and consistent. You could also go to a pet store and ask strangers to help if they are comfortable. Please post again if this doesn't help and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
