My conures play with toys when I talk. Is it territorial or play?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Conure | Female

I have a pair of Patagonian Conures. Whenever I talk to them or try to socialize with them, they run to their toys (usually bells) an start playing. I don';t know if this them being territorial, or encouraging me to play with them.

It's possible they are trying to interact with you. Signs of aggression/territorialness may include loud screaming, hissing, attempting to bite, wing flapping, etc in an attempt to get you to move away. If they are nicely interacting with you and then going to the toy and still interacting in a positive manner, then it may be they want to play. Offering a toy or treat from your hand may help encourage healthy bonding.

The only way to find out is to take them up on it and play with them. Start by ringing the bell as well when they do that. Find ways to play with them. If they are territorial they will try to chase you away from the bell or their cage.
