Why is my senior cat sleeping more and not being social anymore?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 18 lbs

My senior cat, Mel, has stopped being social and prefers to sleep on a pillow in the bed instead of what he used to do (hang out with me in the living room or wherever I was before bedtime). I took him to the vet and everything is ok. I don’t know what to do or what’s wrong. Any thoughts?

He may be in pain from arthritis and therefore prefers not to move much. Old cats sleep a lot as well. You may want to take him to a feline veterinarian and ask about arthritis in cats, and have him checked for it. A feline vet will be more likely to prescribe a particular NSAID (off-label) for your cat if there is pain than a "regular" vet.
