Why is my dog suddenly lethargic, not eating, and has black poop?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 10 days old | 14 lbs

This morning my dog was acting fine and then around noon, we got up and went outside and after she got back in she didn't want her treat. I tried to give her food and she hasn't eaten since. She's been lathergic and she also pooped once in the floor and it was a normal poop but also had some black liquid along with it. Now she still hasn't really eaten and she is just acting lazy which isn't normal for her at all.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Loss of appetite and lethargy can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Gracie Mae evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck and have a great day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
