My dog ate bad food, has loose stool, peed inside. When to see vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 40 lbs

My dog has accidentally eaten some bad stuff recently (some chocolate ice cream on Thursday and oatmeal cookies on Sunday, we’ve learned he can reach the table...) so I’ve been serving him 1/2 cup chicken, 1 cup rice, 1 cup water all mixed up. He had diarrhea sunday, now loose poops. Other than what I mix into his food, he’s not drinking water, and now he just very uncharacteristicly peed inside even after a long walk. What’s going on and at what point should I take him to the vet?

It sounds like the diarrhea is resolving, so as long as that continues I wouldn't worry about seeing your vet. You can gradually transition back to his usual diet once the stool seems mostly formed. Urinating inside can occasionally be a sign of a urinary tract infection, urinary disease, or a disease that is causing dilute urine. If Louis seems to urinate more frequently or has another accident I'd recommend having your vet examine him and check a urine sample.
