My dog is sore after subcutaneous fluids. Is this normal and when?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 11 months and 18 days old | 15 lbs

Jack was given sub cu fluids yesterday afternoon. This morning, his back is very sore to the touch, he slinks down if you try to let him. And if you lift him he cries out. Is this normal for subcu and when should it subside? He’s had fluids once before and did not have this reaction.

Sometimes the skin and the subcutaneous space where the fluid was put can get sore, especially if there was a lot of fluid pressure. This should go away after a day or two. Next time Jack needs subcutaneous fluids ask the vet to divide the fluid up into two separate places, it might help keep it from being sore afterwards.
