Why can't my dog use her back legs and is struggling to breathe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Male | neutered | 9 lbs

My miniature pincher woke up and is not able to use her back legs and has them crossed and is panting to the point she acts like she cant breathe. Her back legs have always been iffy because she was the runt but this is the first time she has acted this way. Our vet is a long trip so just want to reach out first on here.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am concerned that this is likely due to a neurological abnormality such as a herniated disc which can be a surgical emergency. However, other things are possible. This does warrant a veterinary evaluation as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. They can then recommend therapy accordingly. Best of luck!
