My dog's paw pad is bleeding. Does she need a vet or antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 8 months old

My German Shephard Dog was outside on our farm and came inside with her paw pad tissue bleeding on 1 toe. We arent sure if she cut it on something or if is due to cracking and dryness as it is very wet cold and snowy out. I was wondering how best to care for it? Does she require antibiotics? Is there a cream I should apply? I have attached a photo of the injury. This was yesterday and we've been keeping it wrapped in gauze. She has 3 week old puppies.

Kali needs to see a veterinarian. She is going to need pain medication, antibiotics and a bootie. I would also recommend an Elizabethan collar so she doesn't lick at this. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
