Yes, you are ready. Since he will be vaccinated first there is less risk and I recommend getting his full vaccination series before he gets on the couch if you’re worried. In my experience canine distemper is not that easily spread except by direct contact. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Tobi.

You are ready for the new puppy. You have done all that you need to do at this point. I would consider having the couches professionally cleaned as well. Best of luck with your new puppy! Take care.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, your friend should wait AT LEAST another month before getting another puppy, and should clean the whole house and yard very well with a mild bleach solution, probably 3-4 times, 3 days apart. Also, make sure the next puppy comes from a mother dog that is fully vaccinated, and the puppy is fully vaccinated. Best of luck!

Cleaning with a solution of one part bleach mixed with approximately 30 parts water is an acceptable method for disinfecting any indoor area (including bedding, food/water bowls, and all surfaces) that once housed an infected dog. There is evidence suggesting that CPV loses some of its ability to infect an animal after one month in an indoor environment. By what you described I think you are finally ready to have the new puppy in the house.
