Why is my unspayed dog licking her nipple and acting strange?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 6 lbs

Why does my dog lick her wound on her nipple? She was acting different as of recent. I’m a bit concerned because she’s never behaved this way. She’s hiding under my bed and into my pillows. She growled at me when I went to grab her from under the bed. It’s almost like she thinks she’s guarding something, cause her growl felt aggressive. She’s a 7 year old Yorkie, she hasn’t been neutered. Could this be a possible infection?

It certainly sounds like she may have a mammary gland infection or even a uterine infection and the growling is a warning not to touch her as she may be in pain or feels very vulnerable due to not feeling well. I would certainly take her to a vet or PetER tomorrow if she has not improved or is worse or does not eat or if she drinks more water than usual.
