My dog's broken nail isn't painful, but he chews it. Vet or groomer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 63 lbs

One of Winston’s nails seems to be broken. He doesn’t flinch when we touch it so I don’t think it hurts, but he’s been chewing at it. Does this warrant a vet visit or just a trip to the groomer?

The broken part of the nail needs to be cut off. A groomer can do this. As long as the nail bed isn’t bleeding or painful there is no need to see a veterinarian. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Winston.
