Why is my dog wobbly and lethargic after vomiting? Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 7 months old | 43 lbs

My dog vomited the other night and appeared intoxicated afterwards. He was staring off into space and lethargic. He was very wobbly walking and his head was bobbing slightly like he couldn't keep it up. He doesn't vomit regularly and this has only happened twice with 2 weeks between. He didn't appear to be choking nor had trouble vomiting and he appeared normal prior to vomiting. Any ideas on what could cause this or if it is something I need to have him seen for immediately?

I'm wondering if Jax may have had a vasovagal episode after vomiting. This is a reflex that sometimes occurs after vomiting and results in a low heart rate and low blood pressure, and sometimes even collapse. While it is not necessarily a sign of something more serious if the vomiting continues or another episode occurs I would recommend seeing your veterinarian so they can make sure something more serious isn't going on - low blood sugar, ingestion of a toxin, or even liver disease could also cause similar symptoms.
