Why is my dog's behavior suddenly aggressive towards other dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 38.801 lbs

My dog has started pinning other dogs and harassing them. She seems to be picking on dogs her size and smaller, both female and male but not every dog we meet and know. She’s not listening to me at all and even chasing after them once their out of sight. I’ve tried putting her in a ‘time out’ and refocusing her with some basic commands but I’m now having to keep her on the lead and avoid other dogs as I don’t want things to turn nasty. What could be the cause of this behavioural change?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is just likely a display of dominant behavior. These types of behavior can improve though this does require in person training with the help of a qualified dog trainer. I would encourage you to contact a dog trainer that can work with you and Tova in person to really take care of this behavior. The sooner these behaviors are dealt with, the more likely it is that you can improve and resolve them. Good luck and have a great day!

I hate to hear this is happening. Canine aggression is a complex behavior as it can stem from dominance, possessiveness, fear, anxiety, resource guarding or a combination. Unless you are very familiar with reading canine body language and training, I recommend to work with a professional trainer. Researching on your own will also be helpful. Familiarizing yourself with canine body language and dog training can help you to recognize what your pet is trying to say. You can find many books written on the topic and there is a trainer named Victoria Stilwell who I think is particularly helpful. Best of luck.
