My cat had surgery. Is it normal to feel the pins or for them to move?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat Cleo just had surgery for a broken growth plate. She had the surgery about 3 weeks ago. She hasn’t been very active since because I’ve kept her kenneled. The surgeon put two pins to secure her growth plate. I noticed this morning that there was a small bump on her leg where the surgery occurred. It sort of feels like the pin. I also want to note that she’s limping around like she normally has since the surgery. She doesn’t seem like she’s in any pain. Is it common for the pin to migrate?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Cleo. Yes, in rare cases pins can migrate after a surgery. Other times as the body heals and swelling subsides, the pins are more easily felt. If she starts to act painful, her lameness increases or she refuses to eat, then she will need to be seen today. If she is otherwise acting normal, then I would contact her surgeon on Monday. You can describe her condition and see if a recheck appointment or x-rays are warranted. In the meantime, follow your surgical discharge instructions. I hope this information helps!
