How do I stop my cat from bad behaviors like biting or eating food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 9 lbs

She has a cat tree, scratching post, several toys, and a closed window for her to watch. So she's definitely not deprived. In addition to good diet and water. What am I supposed to do at the heat of the moment when she's doing bad behaviour? Hiss at her? Slightly hit her (like cats do to each other)? Yell "No"? ...

Great question! Firmly tell her "no" and move the object away, or you move away. Ignorance can be seen as a type of punishment, it should only take 15 or so seconds for her to feel the lack of attention. If she is doing something bad across the room, you can use a spray bottle to spray her. Make sure to reinforce good behaviors with positive attention and a treat every now and then.
