Why does my dog scream when picked up after shots? Injection site?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 years and 10 months old | 4 lbs

This morning Precious had her yearly exam so she got her shots. parvo booster & rabies - she only screamed during one of them. She also got her anal glands expressed. Now when I pick her up she screams. but she has no problem running or jumping. Did I probably hit the injection site?

Hello, thank you for your question about Precious. Based on what you've described I would be suspicious that you did hit one of her injection sites. After injections the area can be tender and mildly uncomfortable for the first 24 hours. If you notice that any significant swelling or firmness occurs I would consult with your veterinarian, otherwise you should be fine to continue to monitor her. Hope this helps!
