My dog has bladder issues. Should I worry about Acepromazine sedation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Blue Heeler | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old | 45 lbs

My 3 year old male dog has had frequently urination but small stream and for long lengths of time. He also has a lot of accidents in the house as if he has no control. Vet determined that he had an enlarged bladder. Sent in a bladder sample and everything looked good except for some debris. They prescribed him acepromazin to control urethra spasms and it has me questioning it because of the sedative effects it has and the fact that he is a herding breed and may be a carrier. I personally would use Prazosin instead to control urethral spasms. Discuss this with your vet to see if this is a better option for him. Acepromaxine has negative effects such as sedation and sometimes urogenital issues, so it isn’t my first choice for this condition, but every doctor is a bit different based on their experience. Prazosin has minimal sedative effects do you should be happier with it. Best wishes and take care!
