My new cat purrs a lot but also coughs. Is it breathing trouble?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 lbs

I brought an orange Tabby home 3 days ago. He's 3 years old and at first I thought he was always purring because hes really affectionate, but twice now, first day for a few seconds and just now for a few seconds he went into a coughing fit. Are these linked? Is he purring or having trouble breathing?

This could simply be a reverse sneezing episode that you are seeing with Jin. Check out this video to see if this is similar to what you are seeing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOKp3bbWpZ8 If this is not what you are seeing, then coughing in cats typically is caused by an upper respiratory infection or asthma. Especially if you are hearing wheezing sounds as well. Its best to have her seen by your vet if that is the case. Best wishes with your pet Jin moving forward. Take care.
