Pregnant with an aggressive dog: Can he live safely with a baby?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 70 lbs

I rescued my dog from a shelter. He was 2 at the time. He doesn’t get along well with other animals, he is quite aggressive. I ended up conceiving my first child and I am 5 months pregnant.. my husband thinks he’s too big and rambunctious to have around a baby but I’ve grown to love him despite the shedding & behavior around other animals. But honestly I’ve been on the fence about surrendering him because this is my child vs him I feel so bad but I don’t know if I fully trust him. Help! :(

You have to do what is best for your family. All dogs, whether trusted or not, should always be under direct supervision around babies. I would recommend that you have Jack evaluated by a veterinary behaviorist. The vet will be able to help you work on behavior modification and give you guidance on what changes need to be made before the baby comes.
