Why does my senior dog smell bad? What causes new odors in old dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Lhasa Poo | Female | spayed | 15 years and 10 months old | 10 lbs

My senior lhasapoo, age 16 in January, is developing an odor. I change the pad on her bed daily. I have her groomed regularly. She is currently on science diet k/d food. She has had bladder stones in the past.

Different odors have different causes. A foul odor may indicate a bacterial infection. A yeast infection sometimes smells like Fritos. A fruity smell can indicate ketones created by diabetes. Dental disease also has a strong smell. Anal gland "juice" smells fishy. If you can't figure out where the odor is coming from, I would have Muffin examined by the vet.
