My dog is lethargic, vomiting, and not eating. Should I go to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 11 months old | 7 lbs

My dog has been very lethargic all day, I tried to take her on a walk but she just laid down on the sidewalk. She threw up twice and it was yellow and she is shivering. She has been streching a lot like she has an upset stomach. Her breath also smells really bad although we brushed her teeth. She hasn't eaten anything all day. Should I take her to the vet?

It sounds like Ginny definitely has some GI distress going on if she is very lethargic, vomiting, and not eating. I would schedule a vet visit to have her examined if it continues, and if she seems in severe distress, has a very painful abdomen, or looks bloated, bring her in ASAP or to a local ER clinic. Various causes, such as general GI upset, obstructions, parasites, illness, pancreatitis, etc can all cause similar symptoms to this, so an exam to find the cause is best.
