My ferret won't stop biting me. How do I stop aggressive behavior?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Ferret | Male | neutered | 2 lbs

I know this isn’t a medical question, but my ferret will not stop biting. I’ve tried bite sprays, scruffing, time outs, distraction and He continues to bite. I don’t know what else to do, my hands are so cut up from me playing with him and he latched onto my hand instead of his toys.

Thanks for reaching out about Bubba and including photos. Behavioral training in ferrets is often difficult. Is he young or older? If older, did he used to play nicer? Older ferrets (3+ years) can sometimes develop adrenal tumors that produce testosterone, and increase aggression. Otherwise, it is probably behavioral and just plays hard. Shorter periods of play time, and stopping prior to "rough" play might help alleviate problems. Consulting an animal behavioralist might have better ideas. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about your ferret. Seventeen months of age is a little old for aggressive behavior due to hormones, but that would be the first thought. Asserting dominance and even rough play are common other reasons for biting behavior. Obviously, castration could lessen some aggression. Otherwise, behavioral training (same as with puppies) can educate the ferret to proper behavior. Consulting a local veterinarian is recommended. Good luck.
